Many factors will affect the specifics of a good hardware design.

Uppermost are the client’s system specification which defines functionality and performance, and these are impacted upon by environmental considerations (temperature, humidity, EMC requirements, vibration tolerance, supply quality etc…).

Cost is always a factor, and the client’s priority in this regard will determine the design philosophy - this sometimes represents the greatest challenge to our creativity.

We frequently design for rugged environments (having designed many portable systems) to include significant vibration, temperature and humidity levels.

Full ingress protection and conformal coating of PCB assemblies is quite normal for us, as is the use of IP-rated enclosures and connectors, and breathable membrane vents when required.
